Associate business development training

Build from day one.

Most associate BD training doesn’t stick. Not because your associates aren’t capable — but because the training doesn’t get to the root of what’s actually stopping them.

In our experience, the thing most often standing between a senior associate and partnership isn’t technical ability. It’s BD confidence. That’s what we build.

After one session with GFC, a lawyer reignited a client relationship that had been dormant for eight years. A small group of associates at a law firm generated four new matters within six weeks of completing our programme — paying for the investment and then some.

The Momentum Programme: a proven framework for BD success

Momentum is our flagship associate training programme — and one of the only programmes of its kind. It isn’t a watered-down version of what partners get. It’s built specifically for where associates actually are: earlier in their careers, often uncertain about what BD should look like for them, and working in firms where expectations aren’t always clear.

We start with mindset before we get to method. Because the problem is rarely that associates lack skill — it’s that they haven’t dealt with the beliefs that are stopping them from using those skills.

By the end of Momentum, associates don’t just know what to do. They’re doing it — consistently, confidently, and in a way that fits around their actual workload.

What the four sessions deliver:

  • Session 1 — Mindset: Associates surface and dismantle the beliefs that have been stopping them acting on BD. By the end, they’ve reframed what BD means for them — and why it matters now, not just at partner level.
  • Session 2 — Method: Associates understand how work actually flows into a firm, where they fit in that picture, and how to focus their effort on the right opportunities rather than trying to do everything.
  • Session 3 — Momentum: Associates build a practical, realistic BD habit — using simple tools and a planning framework they’ll actually use. No complex systems. No extra admin.
  • Session 4 — Mastery: Associates leave with a live, personalised 12-month BD plan — not a template, but a real plan built around their practice, relationships, and goals.

What the programme looks like in practice

Momentum is delivered remotely over three to four months — designed to fit around client work, not compete with it. Four 90-minute sessions, a follow-up Q&A, and ongoing support between sessions mean learning embeds gradually rather than all at once.

Every firm gets a tailored version of the programme. We start with a diagnostic so we understand your associates, your culture, and where BD tends to get stuck — and we build from there.

Included as standard

The programme is delivered remotely over 3–4 months and includes:

Not ready to commit to a full programme? Start with a 90-minute taster session. Most firms that do go on to run the full programme — because they can see quickly that it works.

Common concerns

The questions we hear most often — and what we’d say

The longer you wait to introduce BD, the harder it is to build good habits. By the time someone reaches partner level, they're expected to be commercially confident — but if they've had no earlier training, they're playing catch-up at exactly the moment when the stakes are highest.

We help associates see BD as part of their role from the start. The result is more confident contributors, a stronger pipeline, and better-prepared future partners.

Momentum is designed around that constraint. Four sessions over three months, each 90 minutes. Between sessions, associates work on short, practical tasks — nothing that requires a separate chunk of their day. The programme is built to create time in the long run, not consume it.

If you need something lighter to start, we also offer standalone 60 to 90-minute sessions.

This is the question we think about most when we design our programmes. BD activity by associates directly drives more mandates from existing clients, stronger referral networks, and a healthier long-term pipeline. These are outcomes you can track — and we give you the tools to do it.

In one recent programme, a small group of associates secured four new matters within six weeks. The programme paid for itself, and then some.

Why work with us?

We’re a small, deliberately composed team — and that’s a strength, not a caveat. Between us we bring three vantage points you don’t often find together: former Legal 500 researchers, a former solicitor from a Top 100 firm, and a founder who has built her own client base from scratch. We understand the legal world from the inside, and we’ve each navigated it differently.

We’re not a training provider that delivers and disappears. We’re invested in whether BD actually sticks — whether it becomes part of how your associates work, not something bolted on top of an already full day.

In practice, that means:

  • We diagnose before we prescribe. Every programme starts with understanding your firm, your associates, and where BD tends to break down. We don’t deliver a standard deck.
  • We start with mindset, not method. Most BD training fails because it skips this step. We don’t.
  • We give your associates tools they’ll actually use. Simple frameworks, realistic planning, and habits that fit around a full fee-earning day.
  • We make it easy to evidence the impact. Every programme includes a progress report so you can show the partners what changed — and why it was worth it.

Let’s talk about your associates

If you're thinking about associate BD training or wondering whether now is the right time we're happy to have a no-pressure conversation about what your firm needs. Most conversations start with a 20-minute call. From there, we'll tell you honestly whether Momentum is the right fit, and if so, what it would look like for your firm.
