Associate business development training

Build the that make partnership possible.

Most associate BD training doesn’t stick. Not because your associates aren’t capable — but because the training doesn’t get to the root of what’s actually stopping them.

In our experience, the thing most often standing between a senior associate and partnership isn’t technical ability. It’s BD confidence. That’s what we build.

After one session with GFC, a lawyer reignited a client relationship that had been dormant for eight years. A small group of associates at a law firm generated four new matters within six weeks of completing our programme — paying for the investment and then some.

The Momentum Programme: a proven framework for BD success

Momentum has always been our flagship in-house programme. We’ve now opened it to associates who want to join independently — regardless of whether their firm has a programme in place.

The training is delivered remotely over three to four months – designed to fit around client work, not compete with it. Four 90-minute sessions, a follow-up Q&A, and ongoing support between sessions mean learning embeds gradually rather than all at once.

We start with a diagnostic so we understand your culture, and where BD tends to get stuck, and we build from there.

Are you an individual looking to further your BD skills outside of your firm?

Momentum Open is for associates who want to get started without waiting for their firm. Cohort 1 runs September 2026.

What the four sessions deliver

Momentum is our flagship associate training programme — and one of the only programmes of its kind. It isn’t a watered-down version of what partners get. It’s built specifically for where associates actually are: earlier in their careers, often uncertain about what BD should look like for them, and working in firms where expectations aren’t always clear.

The programme follows the 4Ms — Mindset, Method, Momentum, Mastery. Each session builds on the last. Associates leave with a live, personalised BD plan — not a template, but a real plan built around their practice and goals.

By the end of Momentum, associates don’t just know what to do. They’re doing it — consistently, confidently, and in a way that fits around their actual workload.

SESSION 1

Mindset

Associates surface and dismantle the beliefs that have been stopping them acting on BD. By the end, they’ve reframed what BD means for them — and why it matters now, not just at partner level.

SESSION 2

Method

SESSION 3

Momentum

Associates build a practical, realistic BD habit — using simple tools and a planning framework they’ll actually use. No complex systems. No extra admin.

SESSION 4

Mastery

How the firm programme works

Delivered remotely over three to four months — designed to fit around client work, not compete with it. We start with a diagnostic so we understand your associates, your culture, and where BD tends to get stuck.

Testimonials

The feedback from the programme was extremely positive and the associates felt they had learnt valuable skills to take forward in their business development activities. I highly recommend Gemma’s services if there are coaching or development needs – she will expertly identify those needs and is very effective at getting the job done.

Senior Associate

Taylor Wessing

This has probably been the most important investment in my career since law school. For nearly a decade, I have felt like I have been wandering around in the dark searching for clues on how to do good BD, speaking to everyone and no-one at the same time, and with no appreciation of the difference in substance or purpose between BD and marketing. Working with Gemma and Megan has given me the tools to create an actionable road map for sustainable business development, and I will be forever grateful.

The questions we hear most often

'Our associates are too junior to be doing BD'

The longer you wait, the harder it is to build good habits. By the time someone reaches partner level, they’re expected to be commercially confident — but if they’ve had no earlier training, they’re playing catch-up at exactly the moment when the stakes are highest. Momentum helps associates see BD as part of their role from the start.

'They don't have time to add anything else to their plates'

Momentum is built around that constraint. Four sessions over three months, each 90 minutes. Between sessions, associates work on short, practical tasks — nothing that requires a separate chunk of their day. The programme is designed to create time in the long run, not consume it.

'How do we justify the cost internally?'

BD activity by associates directly drives more mandates from existing clients, stronger referral networks, and a healthier long-term pipeline. We give you the tools to track those outcomes. In one recent programme, a small group of associates secured four new matters within six weeks — the programme paid for itself and then some.

Let's talk about your associates

If you're thinking about associate BD training or wondering whether now is the right time we're happy to have a no-pressure conversation about what your firm needs. Most conversations start with a 20-minute call. From there, we'll tell you honestly whether Momentum is the right fit, and if so, what it would look like for you.
